Are you practising enough? Simple Strategies to Show Up More Often

Building and maintaining new habits can often feel challenging, especially when unnecessary barriers exist. To create good habits, preparing well and setting yourself up for success is important.

For example, if you’re trying to change your golf swing, we all know the importance of practise. Sometimes it can be hard to motivate yourself to go and practise, or know what to practise in the first place. But we’ve found over the past 4 and a half years of running G60, that the most successful students we’ve had, believe it or not, turn up to practise sessions at least 4 times per month.

Our G60 practice sessions run for 60 minutes, much like a gym session. But whilst a huge percentage of the Australian population finds time to go to the gym regularly, they don’t always apply the same discipline to practising their golf game. At G60, we focus on reducing constraints, reducing friction and utilising our community to help you achieve your goals faster.

Here are three effective strategies that our members employ to help easily integrate practice into their daily lives.

1. Reduce Constraints: Keep Your Gear Ready

Minimising the effort it takes to begin your practise session is crucial. G60 member Judy keeps a couple of golf clubs in her car at all times, so she's always ready to go. Reducing the constraint of something as simple as carrying a golf bag to the car is a great way to make it easier to come to a practise session.

2. Reduce Friction: Schedule Regular Sessions

By setting fixed times for sessions, we help eliminate the indecision associated with when to practise, thus reducing friction. This scheduling acts as a built-in prompt or reminder, much like setting an alarm.

  • Utilise Online Booking: At G60, members can easily schedule their sessions through the website/app. Booking in advance for the week or month helps solidify your commitment and integrates practice time into your routine, just as you would schedule meetings at work, gym sessions or family outings.

3. Create a Supportive Environment

The setting in which you practise plays a pivotal role in how often you engage in the activity. We ensure that our facilities are not just accessible, but also welcoming and conducive to learning.

  • Community Engagement: Engage with the G60 community. Regular interactions with fellow golfers and your coach can motivate you to attend sessions. Our group sessions create a supportive environment where members compete, have fun and encourage each other.

  • G60 member Sofia mentioned on a cold early morning range session last week, “There’s no way I’d be here hitting balls if this session wasn't scheduled.”

  • It's about more than just practise; it’s about being part of a community that values growth and support.

At G60, our goal extends beyond just providing golf coaching; we aim to make practising golf a seamless and enjoyable part of your life. By keeping your gear ready, utilising scheduled sessions, and engaging with a supportive community, we eliminate barriers, making it easier for you to consistently engage and improve. These strategies not only help you to develop your golf skills but also ensure that every visit to G60 is rewarding and fun.
